Nathan William R .
Highland Village, TX
Hospital: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH
At age 5, Nathan was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a progressive condition which results in muscle degeneration. Nathan’s family was devastated; the disease has no cure and can be fatal. Shortly after diagnosis, the family learned about Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and of the comprehensive care offered under neurologist Brenda Wong, MD. They were impressed with the team of doctors working together – neurologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, physical therapists and others – who all see him in the same visit. Although the schedule is intense, the family is confident Nathan is getting optimal care. The family has been traveling from Texas to Cincinnati for six years. While traveling across state lines adds to the cost of Nathan’s overall care, the family relies on Medicaid to supplement services and equipment that the family’s private insurance does not cover, such as his weekly aquatic physical therapy and a scooter to assist Nathan in getting around.
